Remembering Mighty Sparrow — The Eternal King Who Defined Calypso’s Soul

The Caribbean awoke on Sunday, September 27th, to the kind of silence that feels impossible—the hush that follows when a voice larger than life, richer than rhythm, and deeper than memory finally goes still.
It is the silence of tents without laughter, of streets without melody, of a people pausing to remember the man whose songs carried our joy, our pain, and our pride across generations.

Slinger Francisco, the Mighty Sparrow—our Calypso King of the World—has passed away in New York City at age 91, surrounded by family after a brief illness. His departure closes one of the most extraordinary chapters in Trinidad and Tobago’s cultural history.

For more than seven decades, Sparrow was not merely a performer. He was the standard. The benchmark. The voice that carried Trinidad & Tobago’s wit, fire, sensuality, and political courage across the world. His artistry shaped calypso’s identity, and his legacy will outlive every generation that loved him.

From Grand Roy to Laventille—The Birth of a Genius

Sparrow’s story begins in Grand Roy, Grenada, where he was born on July 9, 1935. At just two years old, he migrated with his family to Trinidad—an island whose rhythms would define his destiny.

Growing up in Laventille, Sparrow absorbed the pulse of steelpan, Carnival, and calypso tents. By his teens, he was already performing with neighborhood steelbands, sharpening the vocal precision and lyrical fearlessness that would soon make him unstoppable.

In 1956, Trinidad & Tobago witnessed the arrival of a phenomenon. Sparrow’s Jean and Dinah swept both the Calypso King and Road March titles—a double victory that electrified the nation and announced the rise of a once‑in‑a‑century talent.

The Calypso King of the World Classics

Sparrow’s catalogue is a living archive of Caribbean life. His songs captured politics, humor, romance, scandal, and social commentary with unmatched elegance.

His classics include

  • Jean and Dinah (1956)—the anthem that changed everything, Sparrow's breakout hit and a defining moment in calypso history.
  • Congo Man—a daring, theatrical, unforgettable piece of storytelling; one of his most iconic performances.
  • Obeah Wedding—a comedic masterpiece blending folklore, satire, and Sparrow’s unmatched delivery.
  • Dan Is the Man in the Van—a witty critique of colonial education wrapped in irresistible melody.
  • Both of Them—sharp, humorous social commentary that remains a fan favorite.
  • Mr. Walker—a brilliant narrative calypso showcasing Sparrow’s storytelling genius.
  • The Lizard—One of his most beloved comedic songs—playful, clever, and timeless.
  • Saltfish—a classic double‑entendre calypso that demonstrates Sparrow’s lyrical finesse.
  • Phillip My Dear—a melodic gem with Sparrow’s signature blend of humor and social observation.
  • Maria—A beautifully crafted calypso that highlights his vocal warmth and emotional range.

His catalogue is immense and timeless, spanning over seventy albums and performances that took him from humble calypso tents to the world’s grandest stages, including Madison Square Garden. Sparrow possessed a rare combination of vocal brilliance, razor‑sharp lyricism, and international influence—a combination no other calypsonian has ever matched.

Carnival Dominance — A Record for the Ages

Sparrow’s competitive achievements remain unmatched:

A Final Farewell

In his later years, Sparrow embraced Christianity and was baptized into the Seventh-day Adventist faith, which became a source of comfort for his family as they shared the news of his passing.

His death comes just days before Calypso History Month, a moment that now carries more profound meaning. Trinidad & Tobago will celebrate him not only in mourning but also in gratitude for the immeasurable gift he gave us.

The Eternal King

Sparrow’s voice shaped nations.
His lyrics sharpened minds.
His music carried Trinidad & Tobago to the world.

He was a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, mentor, and friend.
But to us—here at home and across the diaspora—he will forever remain:

🌹 Rest in Power, Mighty Sparrow

Your music shaped nations.
Your wit sharpened minds.
Your voice carried Trinidad & Tobago to the world.
Your legacy will live forever in every tent, every carnival, every steelpan yard, and every diaspora celebration.

Calypso Cannot Wait: Carnival 2027 Starts NOW

Don’t Let Calypso Slip Into the Shadows
If I had the ability to write calypso lyrics, the following phrase would surely be in my song, "Before Soca takes over, remember Calypso!" Now let's talk some truths... As Trinidad and Tobago approaches Carnival 2027, the energy is already building. Soca releases are coming out earlier than ever, steelband competitions are warming up before parang season even starts, and national attention is already turning toward February.

But in all this excitement, something important is at risk:
Calypso is being pushed into the background—again.

For years now, Calypso lovers have watched a troubling pattern repeat itself. Many radio stations simply do not play new Calypsos, and artists, knowing this, often don’t bother sending their music in. The result? A genre that built our Carnival—our storytelling, our social commentary, our cultural backbone—is fighting for oxygen in its homeland.

Today, the main outlets consistently giving Calypso a voice are WACK 90.1 FM, Kaiso Dial, Sokah2Soca, and of course, YouTube, where artists can bypass the gatekeepers and reach listeners directly. These platforms have become the lifeline for a genre that deserves far more respect and visibility.

And that brings us to a moment worth celebrating.

A Bright Spark for 2027: Keipalo’s “Open Your Eyes”
Recently, Sokah2Soca featured a powerful new release from Trinidadian‑born, Canada‑based artist Keipalo (Keith Bishop). The track, “Open Your Eyes,” has already stirred excitement among Calypso fans—and for good reason.

When 'Lenny D Trini' heard the song, his reaction was clear. He called it a release that makes you “fasten your seatbelts and tune up your musical helmets,” because if this is how the 2027 Calypso/Kaiso season is starting, we’re in for something special.

Keipalo delivers a message that speaks directly to the heart of the nation.
“Open Your Eyes” urges listeners—especially the youth—to choose life over violence, to wake up, stand firm, and reclaim their sense of purpose. The lyrics are sharp, clean, and intentional. The melody is sweet enough to hold your attention from start to finish. It’s Calypso with clarity, conscience, and cultural weight.

This is precisely the kind of music Trinidad and Tobago needs right now.
This is precisely the kind of music that belongs on the radio.
This is precisely the kind of music that proves Calypso is still alive, still relevant, and still capable of moving a nation.

A Call to Action for Carnival 2027
As the Carnival engine revs up, let’s not let the early Soca rush drown out Calypso. Let’s give these artists—veterans and newcomers alike—the platforms, the visibility, and the respect they deserve.

Calypso is not background music.
Calypso is not seasonal filler.
Calypso is culture, commentary, identity, and truth.

Sokah2Soca, Kaiso Dial, and WACK 90.1 FM will continue to champion the genre. But real change happens when listeners demand Calypso, artists feel encouraged to release it, and media remembers its responsibility to the culture.

Carnival 2027 is coming fast.
Let’s make sure Calypso comes with it—loud, proud, and impossible to ignore.

Keipalo Lights Up the 2027 Calypso Season with “Open Your Eyes”

When “Lenny D Trini” Calls… You Move.
Every now and then, somebody rings your phone, and you immediately know the assignment is serious.
So when Lenny D Trini tells me,

“Boss… yuh HAVE to post this one. It has depth, meaning… plus the melody is sweetttt fuh days!”
I didn’t hesitate. If we’re starting the season at this level, then Trinidad & Tobago is in for a real treat—and producers like Kenny Phillips better come prepared with their A‑game to keep up.

Today’s feature is a calypso with purpose, clarity, and cultural weight.

🎶 Keipalo – “Open Your Eyes”
“Open Your Eyes” is a powerful, message‑driven calypso that calls for unity, self‑awareness, and resilience within the Black community. Keipalo isn’t just singing—he's reasoning, reminding, and awakening.

Key Themes
Overcoming adversity:
The song insists that no challenge is too formidable and that the moment to shine has arrived.

Ancestral strength:
Keipalo grounds listeners in heritage, invoking ancestors as “kings and queens”—a reminder of dignity and lineage.

Unity and action:
The song is a call to “wake up,” “stand firm,” and “unite” to build a stronger, more conscious future.

Throughout the track, the metaphor of opening one’s eyes becomes a spiritual and cultural awakening—a push toward clarity, purpose, and fulfilling one’s true potential. Faith, prophecy, and identity weave through the lyrics, giving the song both emotional and historical weight.

This is calypso with a backbone.
Calypso with intention.
Calypso that reminds us of who we are.

The season will be serious business if this is the energy we're starting with!

This is Lenny's take on the song:
"Fasten Your Seatbelts—The 2027 Calypso/Kaiso Season Has Officially Lifted Off

Folks, if this is the start of the 2027 Calypso/Kaiso season, then I suggest you fasten your seatbelts and tune up your musical helmets, because we are in for a real treat.

Get familiar with this young, semi‑newcomer, Keith Bishop, known as Keipalo—a name born from “Keith from Paloseco.” Now residing in Canada, he’s making a strong comeback to the Calypso arena with his new track “Open Your Eyes.”

This song delivers a meaningful and wide‑awake message to the nation, especially to our youth. Keipalo urges them to choose life, not death, at a time when violence continues to plague our land and our society. The lyrics are clean, sharp, and straight to the point, giving a clear vision of what he’s pouring out. And the melody? The melody is sweet enough to hold your attention from start to finish.

Well done, Keipalo—and best wishes for the 2027 Carnival season and beyond."

Let us spread awareness of the Caribbean diaspora's culture.
